Everything you need to know to be successful in high school and college can be learned from Star Wars. Whether you are a high school or college student, there is wisdom to be learned from the Jedi, Sith, and The Force. Here are five things that will help take you from Padawan to Jedi.

  1. “Do or do not, there is no try.” – Master Yoda
Look, failure will happen. Maybe you study for hours and still get a C on an exam, or your team is in the championship game and you come up one point short of winning. The fear of failure will freeze many students, keeping them from achieving their dreams.Take a lesson from Yoda and don’t let fear keep you from moving forward. “Even in failure, we learn what success looks like.” That one is not from Star Wars, but hey The Last Jedi is out in December, Disney has my permission to use that line.A little blue milk couldn’t hurt you either. 😉

  3. Strike me down and I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi
Want to know what I think is the best trait a person can have? Resiliency. It’s a trait that most heroes have. Most people are not naturally good at things. It takes practice, time and effort to achieve your goals. But I see too many people give up when faced with adversity. Where would we be if the Rebel Alliance gave up when they saw the Death Star? What if Jyn threw in the towel after watching her father die?

  5. “There is a 97.6 percent chance of failure.” – K2SO
“The possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1.” C-3PO

This one is so important it has two quotes. Don’t get caught up in the odds, especially when they are in your favor. There are few guarantees in this world or far, far away galaxies, don’t assume that the numbers dictate that you will or will not succeed. People who think that the result is a foregone conclusion often stop putting in the work necessary to achieve the desired outcome. Listen to Han Solo when he said, “Great, kid. Don’t get cocky.”

  7. “Aren’t you a little short for a storm trooper?” – Princess Leia
Despite her circumstances, and her need for rescue, Princess Leia found some light in the situation. I heard it said once that humor was the best medicine, that it can cure anything that ails you. When the stress of that test is getting you down, laugh. When life is kicking your butt, laugh. You’ll find that your problems are not as bad as they initially appear when you can take a break and find some humor.

  9. “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” – Darth Vader
Having faith matters. It matters that you have faith in your classmates to follow through on their commitments. It matters that you have faith that your teachers are committed to your growth and education. If you struggle to have faith in the people around you, then think about finding new friends. Faith and hope go hand in hand, so consider the title of Episode IV (A New Hope)and push for the future.
