One of the most useful skills that you should learn in college is how to make and keep track of your own schedule. For the most part, you won’t have any parents, teachers, or other adults reminding you to complete tasks. It’s all on you! Does this sound overwhelming? Follow these tips to take control of your schedule.college_student

Make a Semester/Term Calendar(and keep it updated!)

You need some way to keep track of your daily schedule and your to-do list. It doesn’t matter how you keep track of your schedule (white board, calendar app, planner, etc), but make sure that it is easy for you to maintain. Start by putting down all of the information that you know about your schedule. This includes class days, times and locations, your work schedule, extracurricular activities, important dates for your college (class drop/add dates, holidays, etc), and due dates for all of your assignments. Add all new tasks and events to your calendar as they come up throughout the year.

All of your assignments? They’re in the syllabus.

Most professors will provide your complete class schedule in the syllabus including readings, assignments, and test dates. Put this schedule into your calendar for all of your classes so that you never miss a due date. This will also help you as you create a study schedule.

Use your calendar to make a schedule for studying and homework.

Once you’ve completed your calendar and added all of your assignments, use that information to create a study schedule. It is much better to study in small chunks over a longer period of time than it is to cram all at once, so schedule some study time into your calendar to keep up on your class readings, do your homework, study for tests, and write your papers.

Make a daily/weekly to-do list

Your calendar may seem overwhelming once you have it all finished, so now is the time to break your big tasks down into smaller tasks. Make a weekly to-do list of all the small tasks and check each item off when you’ve completed it.

It may take a while to settle on an organization technique, so keep trying until you find the best option for you! College students, what tips do you have for making and maintaining a schedule? Leave them in the comments below!
