Complete and submit the FAFSA
To apply for federal, state and college-based financial aid, you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov after January 1 but before your college's priority filing date.
Before you complete the FAFSA, gather these items:
- Personal Identification Number - apply at www.pin.ed.gov. The PIN is your signature for the online FAFSA.
- Federal tax return and W-2s
- Driver's license number
- Social Security number
- Current cash, savings and checking account balances
- Current investment values (stocks, bond, mutual funds, CDs, etc.) excluding retirement accounts
- Value of business (if more than 100 employees)
- Value of investment farm (Do not include the value of a family farm that you live on and operate.)
- Child support paid or received
- ADC/TANF welfare benefits
- Social Security payments from SSI or SSDI
- Workers' compensation benefits
- Other untaxed income such as veterans' benefits, housing/food/living allowance for military and clergy
- Alien Registration Number for eligible non-citizens
NOTE: Dependent students also need their parent's income and asset information.
