It’s time to order college planning materials for the 2012-13 school year.

Watch for an email from EducationQuest. It will include a link to an order form. The deadline to submit your order form is April 20, 2012. Materials you can order include:

• EducationQuest Services Poster
• 11th and 12th Grade Timeline – (Also found in the College Prep Handbook)

Counselors – if your school is in the Lincoln or Omaha region, please encourage your juniors and sophomores to begin their college search efforts by attending an upcoming college fair.    

The college fairs, brought to you by the Great Plains Association for College Admission Counseling, will feature representatives from Midwest colleges.  EducationQuest will conduct financial aid sessions at both events.

Your help is needed!

Please help us promote the fairs to your juniors and sophomores by:

• announcing the event in your school bulletin / newsletter
• posting the event on your school website
• sending a reminder via auto-dial a few days before the event
• duplicating the following “four-up” postcard invitations on cardstock and distributing to your juniors, sophomores and to parents at parent/teacher conferences

Free FAFSA tools for your students

Counselors – as your seniors and their parents prepare to complete their first FAFSA, encourage them to visit the “FAFSA Tools” section where they’ll find:

EducationQuest Foundation’s College Access Symposium is Tuesday, March 27 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Online registration is closed, but you are welcome to attend the event. Check-in at the registration table. 

Those encouraged to attend this free event include middle school and high school guidance counselors, community agency professionals, principals, superintendents, and others interested in helping middle school students, high school students and adult learners make college possible.

Nebraska high schools interested in applying for an EducationQuest College Access Grant are required to send a representative to this event.

This “super-sized” event combines the best of EducationQuest training sessions including College Access Training for community agency personnel and Early College Awareness Training. 

The Symposium will include general sessions along with break-out sessions tailored to middle school professionals, high school professionals and agency professionals.

In November and December, EducationQuest awarded mini-grants (up to $1,000 each) to 29 Nebraska schools that serve eighth grade students.

Schools selected in November are Bancroft-Rosalie Community Schools; Bluffs Middle School, Scottsbluff; Burwell Jr.-Sr. High School; Centennial Public School; Crawford Public School, Culler Middle School, Lincoln; Emerson-Hubbard Schools; Gering Junior High; Lefler Middle School, Lincoln; Madison Middle School; Oakland-Craig Public Schools; Stuart Public School; Valentine Middle School; West Point-Beemer Jr. Sr. High School; and Wisner-Pilger Jr. Sr. High School. 

Schools selected in December are Beveridge Magnet Middle School, Omaha; Bryan Middle School, Omaha; Crete Middle School; Greeley-Wolbach Public Schools; Harvard Public School; Johnson County Central Middle School, Cook; McMillan Magnet Center, Omaha; Monroe Middle School, Omaha; Morrill Public Schools; Morton Magnet Middle School, Omaha; Nathan Hale Magnet Middle School, Omaha; Niobrara Public School; Schuyler Middle School; and Walthill Public School.

Through the funding, eighth graders at selected schools will go on at least one campus visit and participate in activities related to college access, such as creating an Activities Resume, exploring careers that require higher education, and learning about financial aid and scholarships. This effort is part of EducationQuest’s 8th, 9th, and 10th Grade Initiative, funded by the federal College Access Challenge Grant,  with the goal to increase the overall college-going rate in the state.
