College Planning Update
Information to help your clients plan for college

Planning to attend college this year?
If college is in your plans for the 2008-09 school year, it isn't too late to submit college and financial aid applications. Contact the college to determine their application procedures.

To apply for financial aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov. For help, check out the new FAFSA Tutorial at www.educationquest.org/fafsa.asp or contact the EducationQuest location nearest you to make an appointment. A college planning professional will explain the admissions process and help you complete and submit the FAFSA. All EducationQuest services are free.

If you can't visit, call for help over the phone.

What to expect after you file your FAFSA
By now, many of you have submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Here's what happens next:

Review your Student Aid Report (SAR)
After you file the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) which summarizes your FAFSA information. If you need to make FAFSA corrections, use your PIN online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or contact the college financial aid office.

Expect your award letter
Your college will use the FAFSA results to determine your financial aid package and will send you an award letter detailing the types and amounts of financial aid you can expect. It might be a combination of grants, scholarships, work-study and student loans. Respond to the college by accepting or rejected the financial aid.

Apply for student loans
If you need a loan, work directly with your college financial aid office.

Beware of scholarship, financial aid offers that require payment
Nebraska students and families have access to free scholarship and financial aid services. That's why you should carefully investigate mailings and advertisements from organizations that charge for these services. If you have questions about mailings or offers you receive, talk to a guidance counselor, college financial aid officer, or an EducationQuest representative.

Check out ScholarshipQuest for Nebraska, local awards
For local and statewide scholarships, check out ScholarshipQuest at www.educationquest.org. This free online scholarship search program features over 1,700 statewide and local awards, and has no pop-up banners or ads.

Community Agency Update
Information for you!

Reaching Your Potential review process underway
Thanks to those who referred applicants to our Reaching Your Potential scholarship program. We have started the review process and, over the next few weeks, will convene two review committees to select recipients who will share approximately $50,000 in renewable, need-based scholarships. We will notify the recipients by May 18.

If you have questions about Reaching Your Potential, contact Lisa Mueller at 800-303-3745, ext. 6606 or email lisam@educationquest.org.

Save the date...for College Access Training!
EducationQuest will conduct College Access Training during June for community agency representatives across the state. You'll receive all the details in May. For now, mark your calendar for the training session nearest you.

June 10 – Columbus
June 12 – Lincoln
June 17 – Alliance
June 18 – North Platte
June 26 – Omaha

The day-long training will cover topics that will help agency staff increase college access for their clients. A detailed agenda will be included with the training invitation in May.
